What Exactly Is the New World Screwworm?
The New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is an obligate parasitic fly whose larvae invade and consume living tissue, causing myiasis with severe consequences for human health, animal welfare, and agricultural productivity. The name is blunt and unpleasant for good reason. This is not a passive parasite. New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae burrow into the flesh of living animals and feed on living tissue. The fly targets wounds, natural openings, and even minor abrasions — anywhere blood or moisture is present.
New World screwworm can enter through relatively small openings, including wounds, scratches, and tick bites. Once inside, the larvae spin and burrow deeper — a behavior that gives the pest its name, as the maggots essentially screw their way into flesh. When NWS fly larvae burrow into the flesh of a living animal, they cause serious, often deadly damage to the animal. Why Wildlife Is the Hardest Part of This Fight
