Ernesto Perez-Carrillo has built a reputation over decades in the cigar world, and his latest release under Casa Carrillo looks to add another chapter to that story. The company is preparing to launch the Casa Carrillo Deep Blue Limited Edition 2026, a ocean-inspired smoke that will make its debut at a Smoke Inn event in Florida before hitting retailers nationwide in May.
One Size, One Vision
Deep Blue comes in a single vitola, and that vitola has a name with some weight behind it — Hades. At 6 inches with a 56 ring gauge, it's a substantial smoke. The name pulls from ancient Greek mythology, where Hades was the god of the underworld, which fits the overall theme the brand is going for with this release.
The blend itself brings together tobacco from multiple regions. The wrapper comes from Jalapa, Nicaragua, a valley known for producing some of the most respected leaf in the industry. The binder is Honduran, and the filler is Nicaraguan as well. All of it gets rolled at the Casa Carrillo factory in the Dominican Republic. The suggested retail price sits at $22 per cigar.
Built to Build on You
Casa Carrillo describes Deep Blue as a "medium plus" bodied cigar, but what makes it interesting is how it's designed to evolve as it burns. The company says the strength rises steadily throughout the smoke, meaning what starts as a manageable, flavorful experience gradually becomes something more intense.
Perez-Carrillo himself explained the thinking behind it. "Deep Blue was blended as a journey," he said. "It's a cigar about discovering what lies beneath."
That line says a lot about the intent. This isn't a smoke meant to be predictable from the first third to the last. The idea is that the person holding it discovers something along the way, whether that's a shift in flavor, a change in body, or just a different experience than where they started.
The Packaging Matches the Theme
The presentation on Deep Blue is hard to ignore. The cigars come in dark blue wooden boxes, each holding 20 cigars. The boxes are decorated with ocean-themed imagery — wave symbols and a large eight-point compass rose are front and center on the design. It's the kind of packaging that looks like something worth keeping long after the cigars are gone.
Only 2,500 boxes will be produced, and each one is individually numbered. That puts the total production run at 50,000 cigars, which sounds like a lot until you consider how fast limited releases from established makers tend to move. With Perez-Carrillo's name attached and a story this well put together, those boxes won't sit on shelves for long.
Why This One Matters
Perez-Carrillo was inducted into the Cigar Aficionado Hall of Fame, a distinction that carries serious weight in this hobby. His work spans decades and multiple brands, and Casa Carrillo has continued to earn attention since its founding. A limited edition from his shop isn't just a marketing exercise — it tends to reflect real effort in the blending room.
The Deep Blue concept, tying the cigar to the ocean, to depth, to discovery, gives it a narrative that goes beyond just a list of tobacco origins and a ring gauge. For someone who takes their time with a cigar and pays attention to how it changes, this is exactly the kind of release worth tracking down.
How to Get One
The cigar makes its first appearance at a Smoke Inn event in Florida this month, which means early access is regional for now. Smoke Inn has a history of being the launch pad for limited releases, and the events around those launches tend to draw serious enthusiasts.
For everyone else, the national rollout is scheduled for May. Given the production limit of 2,500 boxes, finding a retailer with stock early will matter. Those who wait too long on numbered, limited releases from respected makers often end up waiting for the secondary market instead.
