The eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) is the largest venomous snake in North America, with some individuals reaching 8 feet in length. It inhabits dry pine flatwoods, sandy woodlands, and coastal scrub from southern North Carolina through Florida and west to Louisiana. Its hemotoxic venom kills red blood cells and destroys tissue, and a single strike can deliver 400–700 mg of venom — enough to be lethal without rapid antivenom treatment. Despite its fearsome reputation, the eastern diamondback is highly averse to human contact and typically retreats when encountered, only striking in genuine defense. It is, however, considered responsible for more snakebite fatalities in the U.S. than any other species.
The western diamondback (Crotalus atrox) is thought to cause more venomous bites and more snakebite deaths than any other snake in the country. Common across the American Southwest and into northern Mexico, it is equally at home in grassland and rocky desert and delivers a massive dose of 35 to 250 milligrams of venom per strike. Unlike many rattlesnakes, it stands its ground more readily than most when threatened, making encounters particularly hazardous. Its venom is hemotoxic, destroying blood cells and tissue, and the combination of sheer venom volume and widespread habitat makes it statistically the most dangerous rattlesnake in America. Many experts classify the Mojave rattlesnake (Crotalus scutulatus), native to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico, as the deadliest rattlesnake species on Earth. What makes it uniquely dangerous is the dual nature of its venom, which can be either hemotoxic or neurotoxic depending on the population — and some individuals carry both types simultaneously. Neurotoxic symptoms include vision impairment, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, convulsions, and potentially death by cardiac arrest or respiratory failure if left untreated. It is also reportedly more aggressive toward humans than many other rattlesnake species and will bite without obvious provocation. The Mojave green color morph is particularly well camouflaged against desert scrub, making it easy to accidentally approach.

The cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus), also called the water moccasin, holds the distinction of being the only semi-aquatic viper in the world, and has even been observed in saltwater and on near-offshore islands along the East Coast. When threatened, it gapes its mouth wide open to expose a bright white interior — the behavior that earned it its name. Its cytotoxic venom is significantly more dangerous than that of its close relative the copperhead, capable of destroying flesh and in severe cases necessitating amputation. Cottonmouths can reach lengths of up to 6 feet and are often more aggressive than other pit vipers, making unexpected encounters in swamps, slow rivers, and marshes across the Southeast a genuine hazard. The timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) is the most northerly-ranging venomous snake in the United States, found from eastern Kansas and Texas all the way through New England, and even graced the original Gadsden flag with the now-famous motto "Don't Tread on Me." It is a large snake with long fangs and potent venom that it can deliver in alarming quantities, yet it is renowned among herpetologists for its comparatively mild temperament — it will often issue lengthy rattling warnings before striking. Its venom is a hemotoxic cocktail that causes severe pain, muscle spasms, swelling, nausea, and potentially fatal internal bleeding. Despite living in one of the most densely populated regions of North America, documented human fatalities remain low, largely due to the snake's patience and the availability of antivenom. It is listed as threatened or endangered in several northeastern states due to habitat loss.
The eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius) carries some of the most potent venom of any snake in North America, yet its reclusive nature and reluctance to bite mean fatalities are extremely rare. Found across the southeastern United States, it is identifiable by its vivid red, yellow, and black banding — remembered by the rhyme "red touch yellow, kill a fellow." Unlike pit vipers, coral snakes are elapids with small, fixed fangs, which means they must chew to deliver their neurotoxic venom rather than strike and release. That venom attacks the nervous system and can cause paralysis, respiratory failure, and death if not treated with the specific coral snake antivenom, which is distinct from pit viper antivenom. Pound for pound, the tiger rattlesnake (Crotalus tigris) carries the most potent venom of any rattlesnake in the Americas, with an LD50 measured as low as 0.06 mg/kg. It is a small, unusually tiny-headed desert dweller native to southern Arizona and northwestern Mexico, and it ranks among the top ten most venomous snakes in the world. The paradox of this snake is that its venom yield is tiny — just 6 to 11 milligrams per bite — which dramatically limits its overall danger to humans compared to larger rattlesnakes that can inject hundreds of milligrams at once. It gets its name from the bold, irregular cross-banding that resembles a tiger's stripes, and it favors rocky desert canyon terrain where it is rarely encountered. Encounters remain uncommon, but a bite still demands immediate emergency care.
The eastern massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus) is a small but highly venomous pit viper found in swamps, marshes, and fields from the Great Lakes region southward to Texas and eastern Arizona. Most adults measure only 55 to 75 centimeters long, with a broad head, narrow neck, and a pronounced rattle that seems oversized for such a compact snake. Like all rattlesnakes, it can detect the thermal signature of warm-blooded prey using heat-sensing pits between its eyes and nostrils, making it a highly effective ambush predator. Its venom is cytotoxic and, in some circumstances, a bite can cause life-threatening or permanently disabling health complications — disproportionate to what the snake's modest size might suggest. Much of its Great Lakes wetland habitat has been lost to agriculture, and the eastern massasauga is now a federally threatened species in the United States.
The yellow-bellied sea snake (Hydrophis platurus) possesses one of the most potent venoms of any snake found in North American waters, with human-lethal doses estimated at as little as 0.067 mg and an average bite delivering up to 4 mg. It is an oceanic species that rarely comes ashore and is poorly adapted for life on land, which is the primary reason there have been no confirmed human fatalities from its bite in the United States. Occasionally swept toward the Pacific Coast on warm-water currents — particularly during El Niño events — it represents a theoretical rather than practical threat to swimmers and fishermen. Descended from Australian land-based snake lineages, the most effective antivenom is actually produced in Australia and derived from tiger snake serum. Its distinctive yellow underside and dark dorsal coloring make it unmistakable, and any encounter in the water should be given a wide berth.
