Best U.S. Rivers for Fly Fishing

<

Fly fishing is amazing for anyone who loves nature and a good challenge. There's something about standing in a river, casting your line, and waiting for that tug that just hooks you. The U.S. has some killer rivers for fly fishing, packed with trout and epic scenery. Whether you're a newbie or a pro, these spots will make your fishing trip unforgetable. Here’s our top picks for the best rivers to fly fish in the States.

1. South Platte River, Colorado

This river in Colorado is a fly fisher’s dream, loaded with brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. The South Platte’s clear waters and diverse sections, like Cheesman Canyon, offer everything from tight casts to open drifts. I once spent a weekend here with my buddy Jake, and man, we pulled in some beauts while joking about who’d fall in first (spoiler: it was me). The scenery’s unreal, and you’ll find plenty of spots to wade in and test your skills.

2. Madison River, Montana

Montana’s Madison River is straight-up legendary for fly fishing. It’s got tons of rainbow and brown trout, and the wide, steady flow makes it great for all skill levels. The stretch near Ennis is a hot spot, with fish practically jumping at your fly. The vibe here is chill, with mountains all around, making it feel like you’re in a postcard. Hit this river in late summer for some epic dry-fly action.

3. Green River, Utah

The Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is a gem for trout fishing. Its crystal-clear waters are stuffed with hefty rainbows and browns, and the scenery’s jaw-dropping with red rock canyons. The “A,” “B,” and “C” sections give you options for different vibes, from busy to remote. You’ll wanna bring your A-game for these smart fish, but nailing a cast here feels so dang good.

4. Deschutes River, Oregon

Oregon’s Deschutes is a beast for steelhead and trout, especially around Maupin. The fast-moving water and deep runs make it a fun challenge, but the payoffs are huge. I remember watching a local guide school me on reading the water here—it was like fish whisperer stuff! The river’s got a wild, rugged feel, and you might even spot some bighorn sheep while you’re casting. Late summer to fall is prime time.

5. Au Sable River, Michigan

Michigan’s Au Sable River is a Midwest treasure, known for its brook and brown trout. The Holy Waters section is super popular for its steady flow and chill vibe. It’s got that classic, woodsy feel with tons of hatches to keep things exciting. You’ll be tossing flies in no time, and the small-town charm nearby makes it a great spot for a weekend getaway. Trust me, this place is a totaly amazing.
