Nicaraguan Cigars Worth Seeking Out

Why Nicaragua Owns the Cigar World Right Now

<

Nicaragua has quietly — and then not so quietly — overtaken Cuba as the most exciting cigar-producing country in the world. The volcanic soil of regions like Jalapa, Estelí, and Condega produces tobacco with a complexity and intensity that has earned the country a level of respect among serious smokers that would have seemed unlikely just a few decades ago. What sets Nicaraguan cigars apart is their range: you'll find everything from full-throttle, earthy powerhouses to nuanced, medium-bodied smokes with layers of cedar, dark fruit, leather, and spice. The families and master blenders behind the country's great brands have spent generations refining their craft, and the results speak for themselves in blind ratings, industry awards, and the loyalty of discerning smokers worldwide. Whether you're just beginning to explore beyond the familiar or you're looking to deepen an already serious collection, Nicaragua offers some of the most rewarding smokes on the market today.

Padrón 1964 Anniversary: The Gold Standard

Launched in 1994 to celebrate the brand's 30th anniversary, the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series is, for many aficionados, the definitive Nicaraguan cigar. Every stick is made entirely from Nicaraguan-grown tobacco, box-pressed for a distinctive shape, and stamped with a six-digit serial number to guarantee authenticity. The Maduro version delivers cocoa powder, aged cedar, and raisin on the cold draw, with thick, creamy smoke and notes of chocolate, walnut, and black pepper on the light. What makes it memorable is not just richness but restraint — it feels complete rather than loud, a quality that keeps serious smokers returning to it year after year. Available in both natural and maduro wrappers across multiple vitolas, it remains one of the most consistent boxes you can buy. Buy it now!

Oliva Serie V Melanio: A Figurado That Won the Year

The Serie V Melanio is Oliva's crowning achievement — five years in development and crafted by a select group of the factory's most skilled torcedors using aged ligero fillers from Condega and Estelí, with additional leaf from Jalapa for added aroma. It wears a dark, thick, oily Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper that opens with a massive dose of ligero spice before giving way to dark chocolate, roasted nuts, cedar, and black pepper. The Figurado vitola earned the Cigar Aficionado #1 Cigar of the Year honor in 2014 with a 96-point rating, and the line has continued to earn top-25 placements ever since. Construction is consistently flawless — a razor-sharp burn line, firm ash, and a long, warm finish that pairs beautifully with aged bourbon or a dark-roast espresso. It is powerful but refined, a smoke that demands time and rewards attention. Buy it now!

My Father Le Bijou 1922: Pepin's Personal Favorite

José "Pepin" Garcia designed Le Bijou 1922 — French for "the jewel" — as a tribute to his own father, and it is widely regarded as one of the most fully realized Nicaraguan puros ever rolled. The cigar wears a dark Habano Oscuro wrapper over a core of aged Nicaraguan leaf, producing a full-bodied smoke loaded with espresso, black pepper, leather, and cocoa powder that builds gradually rather than overwhelming the palate from the outset. The Torpedo Box Pressed vitola earned a staggering 97 points from Cigar Aficionado and was named its Cigar of the Year in 2015, celebrated for delivering complex notes with uncommon clarity and a sweet-and-salty finish. It is rolled at the My Father Cigars factory on the edge of the Pan-American Highway in Estelí, a family-run operation where Pepin's daughter Janny noted that titles mean little — the entire Garcia family takes responsibility at every level. For a smoke this layered, plan for 90 minutes minimum. Buy it now!

Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970: The Benchmark Nicaraguan Puro

Joya de Nicaragua, established in 1968, holds the distinction of being the oldest cigar brand in Nicaragua and one of the first cigar factories in all of Central America. The Antaño 1970 line was conceived as a tribute to the powerful puro blends that defined the post-embargo Nicaraguan market of the 1970s — the name itself means "yesteryear" in Spanish, and nostalgia is precisely the emotion it evokes. The outer leaf is a dark chocolate-hued Nicaraguan Habano Criollo, wrapped around Nicaraguan fillers that deliver a front-loaded shot of pepper before settling into bitter dark chocolate, nuts, leather, and a pleasant smack of sweetness from the wrapper. It is a full-bodied smoke that commands respect, best approached after a hearty meal rather than on an empty stomach. The Gran Reserva variant adds five years of aging to the filler tobaccos, dialing up the creaminess and complexity considerably. Buy it now!

Padrón Serie 1926: Five Years of Aging, One Perfect Smoke

Created in 2002 to honor founder José Padrón's 75th birthday — the "1926" referencing the patriarch's birth year — the Serie 1926 sits at the absolute pinnacle of the Padrón portfolio. Every cigar contains Nicaraguan tobacco aged for no less than five years before it is rolled, a time and labor investment reflected in the price but justified by the consistency of the result. Like the 1964 Anniversary, each stick is box-pressed and carries a six-digit security code on the band to protect against counterfeiting. The Serie 1926 No. 9 earned a 97-point rating from Cigar Aficionado and was named its Cigar of the Year in 2007, a benchmark that still stands as one of Nicaragua's finest moments. Available in both sun-grown Habano natural and maduro wrappers, the profile runs deep with baking spice, dark fruit, espresso, and a long, clean finish.

My Father The Judge: Nicaragua's Regional Depth in One Cigar

Released in 2016, The Judge was the Garcia family's boldest compositional statement yet — a thick, full-bodied Grand Robusto packed with tobacco from at least three of Nicaragua's distinct appellations: Jalapa, Estelí, and Namanji. The filler draws on fillers from three of the Garcia family's own farms, paired with a double binder of Nicaraguan Criollo and Corojo leaf, and finished with an Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper that is the only non-Nicaraguan component in the blend. It earned 98 points from Cigar Aficionado upon release — one of the highest scores ever awarded to a Nicaraguan cigar — and is packaged in boxes featuring vintage-style lithographic art that gives it serious shelf presence. Expect deep cocoa, cedar, leather, and earthy spice, with a structured draw that rewards experienced palates. The Judge makes a compelling case that the Garcia family's greatest work may still be ahead of them. Buy it now!

AJ Fernandez New World Oscuro: Cigar of the Year on a Budget

AJ Fernandez has grown at a meteoric rate within the Nicaraguan industry, expanding from a single maxed-out Estelí factory to multiple facilities in under two decades — and the New World Oscuro is a prime example of why demand overwhelmed his original production floor. Scoring 94-plus points from Cigar Aficionado and winning its Cigar of the Year distinction in 2014, the New World Oscuro punches so far above its price point that it has become a regular reference for what Nicaraguan tobacco can achieve at an accessible cost. The Oscuro wrapper is dark and assertive, laying down a profile rich in earth and spice — cumin, cardamom, ground clove, and allspice — with an underlying thread of cedar that brings balance and structure. Fernandez's Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador over a blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos creates a consistently satisfying smoke that full-bodied fans return to by the box. It pairs naturally with a peaty Scotch or a high-rye bourbon.

Plasencia Alma Fuerte: When a Growing Dynasty Makes Its Own Statement

The Plasencia family has supplied tobacco to virtually every major Nicaraguan cigar brand for generations, making their agricultural DNA a near-invisible ingredient in countless celebrated blends. It was not until 2016 that Nestor Plasencia released a serious flagship brand of his own — the Alma Fuerte — and it immediately landed on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 list that year. Built primarily around Criollo '98 tobacco that Plasencia grows across multiple Nicaraguan regions, the Alma Fuerte kicked off an ambitious five-part "Alma" series designed to explore the country's distinct appellations in depth. The cigar is full-bodied and richly constructed, offering baking spices, pepper, earth, and a lingering natural sweetness that reflects the quality of leaf grown under Plasencia's own agricultural oversight. For a cigar from a family that has quietly held up the entire Nicaraguan industry, this is the one that finally carries their name front and center. Buy it now!

Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne: The Approachable Classic

Nick Perdomo oversees every stage of his operation from seed to smoke, exercising a level of vertical integration rare even in Nicaragua's family-driven industry. The 10th Anniversary Champagne, built around a seamless golden-blonde Ecuador Connecticut wrapper leaf over Nicaraguan long-fillers aged for six years, has remained the bestselling blend in the brand's portfolio for decades — a testament to its consistency and broad appeal. It delivers a mild-to-medium-bodied profile of cedar, coffee, oak, white pepper, and graham cracker in a smooth, creamy package that makes it one of the most accessible entry points into serious Nicaraguan tobacco. The line is complemented by the Champagne Noir, a bolder Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro variant for smokers who want more body with the same refined construction. Either way, Perdomo's Lot 23 soil discovery and multi-year aging process ensure there is far more going on than the approachable price suggests. Buy it now!

My Father Flor de las Antillas: Cigar of the Year, Every Day Price

A Nicaraguan puro from My Father Cigars, the box-pressed Flor de las Antillas scored a 96-point rating from Cigar Aficionado and took its Cigar of the Year crown in 2012 — and has remained a consistent bestseller more than a decade after that debut. It is full-bodied and full-flavored without being punishing, delivering a perfectly balanced blend of cocoa, cedar, leather, and earth that expands across the smoke. The construction is reliably excellent, with even combustion and a draw that stays consistent from cap to foot. At its price point — well below the prestige lines from the same Garcia family factory — it represents one of the most compelling value propositions in all of premium cigars. For a daily smoke that occasionally makes you wonder why you'd ever reach for anything more expensive, Flor de las Antillas is the answer. Buy it now!
