But here's where it gets really useful — the shadow stick method. One simple technique is to use a stick and its shadow. Place a stick upright in the ground and mark the tip of the shadow. Wait 15 to 30 minutes and mark the new shadow tip. The shadow stick method can create a makeshift compass rose by marking shadow points as the sun moves across the sky. If you don't have more than one stick, you can use rocks or other markers to note the points. The line drawn from your first mark to your second mark runs roughly west to east. Navigating by the Stars at Night
A lot of guys feel a bit panicky when darkness falls and they're still out there. But nighttime isn't your enemy — the sky is actually loaded with information, if you know where to look. On a clear night in the northern hemisphere, finding Polaris, also known as the North Star, can help you find true north. Locate the Big Dipper (Ursa Major). The two stars at the end of its cup point to Polaris, the tip of the Little Dipper's handle.
You can find it by locating the Big Dipper and following the line formed by its two outer edge stars — the "pointer stars" — to a moderately bright star. That's Polaris, sitting nearly due north. Once you've got Polaris locked in, you've got north. Everything else falls into place from there. Face Polaris, and east is to your right, west is to your left, south is directly behind you.
The moon is useful too, though a little trickier to read. If you're navigating at night and the moon is visible, you can use it to determine direction. In the Northern Hemisphere, the moon rises in the east and sets in the west, just like the sun. If you can see the moon's crescent, imagine a line drawn between the two tips of the crescent. Dead Reckoning — Tracking Where You Are as You Move
Dead reckoning is one of those skills that sounds more intimidating than it actually is. One interesting method is dead reckoning. It's a way to keep track of your location by calculating your speed and distance to landmarks. For instance, you can estimate your hiking time and use landmarks to stay on course.
Basically, you're building a mental map as you walk. You note a distinctive landmark — a big rock formation, a creek bend, a ridgeline — and you track how far and in what direction you've moved from it. Average hiking pace on moderate terrain is roughly two to three miles per hour. If you know you've been walking north-northeast for about forty-five minutes at a steady pace, you've got a real estimate of where you are relative to where you started.
Take note of prominent features: large bodies of water, river valleys, the area's tallest peaks, mountain crests or divides, land management details, trailheads, roads, towns, and ranger stations.
