Of the many names for water that anglers use, three labels will be most useful to you: riffle, run, and pool. For purposes of reading water, a river can be divided up into these three different parts. Every river moves through these phases, just in different stages. Get comfortable identifying these three features, and you've already got a massive leg up on most weekend fishermen.
Riffles
Riffles are the bubbly, choppy, fast-moving water that a lot of guys walk right past. Don't. Riffles are full of oxygen and food, and they're a serious piece of the puzzle — especially during warmer months. Riffles are especially effective during warmer months when oxygen levels play a bigger role in trout behavior.
The trick with riffles is not fishing the middle. First you'll notice seams at the edge of the riffle, and these are worth much of your time and effort. Out in the middle of the riffle, look for slicks — areas that look as though someone polished and flattened the bumps on the surface. Those slicks? They're telling you there's something calmer underneath — a rock, a depression, a change in the bottom. Riffle bottoms include nooks and crannies, potholes, channels, a variety of sizes of pebbles and cobbles, branches, limbs, and small logs that change the water speed. Seeing and reading these micro-structures are the keys to catching fish in riffles. If the structure on the bottom cannot be seen, noticing irregularities in the way the surface water looks often indicates submerged objects.
Runs
If you're new to a stretch of water and you don't know where to start, go find a run. Runs are the workhorses of the river. They offer moderate depth and a steady, consistent current that delivers food directly to waiting fish. If you are unsure where to start on a new stretch of water, start with the runs. They provide ideal feeding conditions and often hold multiple fish.
A change to a more moderate gradient usually produces a run. Runs are deeper and bumpy with less or no white water, have a visible, strong current, and may flow over any bottom structure. These are like the prime real estate of a river. They are like highways for fish, who use them to move between feeding and resting areas. A solid run on a good trout river can produce fish after fish if you work it right.
Pools
Trout love to sit in pools. Pools are deep sections of water that look like they have little to no current. On either side, you'll find shallow water. Trout sit in pools because they provide protection, comfortable water temperatures, and easy places to sit. Rocks, logs, and other debris move into the bottoms of pools, providing plenty of protection from predators. Plus, food like insects, smaller fish, and crustaceans drift into these pools, making it easy for trout to eat.
One common mistake guys make is walking straight up to the middle of a pool and bombing casts into the deepest part. Work the edges first. Depending on the time of day and the trout's aggression, they'll feed in the front, middle, or back of pools. Always start by fishing the front of the pool. The head of a pool — where a riffle or run dumps into it — is consistently one of the best spots on any river. If you're new to a stretch of water and don't know where to start, find where a riffle transitions into a run — the head of the pool. Fish stack there. It's consistent across almost every river.
Don't overlook the tailout either. A tailout is a shallow, flat section at the end of a pool before the water spills over into another riffle. Where the water becomes shallow, a natural funnel is formed that brings anything drifting downstream right to the fish. Trout will often wait in a tailout and sip hatching insects off the surface as they float by, so it is a good spot to look for rising fish.
Seams: The Single Most Important Thing to Look For
If I had to pick one concept that improved my trout fishing more than anything else, it would be understanding current seams. I remember the first time an old timer on the Deschutes River in Oregon pointed one out to me — a barely-visible line on the surface where fast water bumped up against slow water behind a mid-channel boulder. A seam is the boundary between fast water and slow water. It forms wherever currents of different speeds meet — on the edge of a riffle, behind a rock, along the bank where the main current slows down. Trout will position themselves just inside the slower water, darting out only slightly to feed. The beauty of it is that once you train your eye to see seams, you'll spot them everywhere on a river. They're the edges of riffles, the far bank of a bend, the downstream side of any boulder, and the margin where a tributary meets the main river. Every single one of those is worth a cast or two.
Look for changes in surface texture — smooth versus choppy water, and darker water running next to lighter-colored still zones. These visual cues are your map. You don't need sonar when the river is literally drawing you a picture.
Structure: What's Under the Surface Matters More Than You Think
Learning to pinpoint structure in different sections of a river is the final step to reading water like a pro and increasing your likelihood of finding trout. Structure can refer to objects in and around the river such as boulders, gravel bars, holes, and changes in bottom contour. Less obvious examples are eddies and current seams created by the river flow, or shade from a high bank.
Boulders are the most obvious piece of structure in any river, and they work for one simple reason. Water flows laterally until it meets an obstacle like a boulder, then flows around it. This creates a deeper, calmer pool on the downstream side. But here's what a lot of guys miss — the upstream side of a boulder also has a dead spot, a pillow of slow water right at the leading face of the rock. Big trout will sometimes hold there too, especially in faster water where the downstream cushion is harder to access.
Don't sleep on undercut banks. Large, dominant fish claim the prime lies that offer the best protection and food access. Look for them deep in the belly of a pool, behind substantial structure like boulders, or under undercut banks where they are hidden from overhead predators. Undercuts are essentialy a roof over a trout's head — shelter from ospreys, herons, and anything else that wants to eat them. If you see a bank that's been carved out by the current, drop a fly along that edge and hold on.
A good section of river might contain several of these features, and as a rule, areas where different types of structures intersect are prime locations to look for trout. A big boulder sitting at the head of a pool with a seam running off one side and an undercut bank twenty feet downstream? That's the kind of spot you remember. That's where the fishing gets good.
Pocket Water: The Spots Everyone Walks Past
Pocket water is one of the most underrated places to find trout, especially in high-gradient streams where pools are short and riffles are long. Pocket water refers to small sections of calm water behind boulders, logs, or other obstacles. These are goldmines, especially in high flows, offering shelter and ambush points.
Rocks, logs, or any break in the current create small "rest areas" where trout can sit comfortably while food drifts right to them. The challenge with pocket water is that the targets are small — sometimes barely bigger than a hat — and you have to be precise with your presentations. But the fish in pocket water tend to be less pressured because most anglers don't bother. If you can land a fly in a pocket the size of a card table, you've earned whatever comes next.
Approach pocket water quietly and low. The windows are tight, the fish are close, and they spook easily. This is wading at its most deliberate — one careful step at a time.
Reading the Surface: What the River Is Telling You
One of the fastest ways to find trout without any electronics is to just watch the river surface and understand what you're looking at. The surface is like a report card on everything happening below.
Slow-moving, smooth surface water often indicates a deep pool, whereas fast, choppy water typically signifies a shallow riffle or run. Darker water generally indicates greater depth, while lighter water suggests shallows, depending on clarity. These aren't hard rules, but they're a solid starting point when you're scanning a new piece of water from the bank. You can eliminate whole sections of river just by reading the color and texture before you ever take a step.
Look for odd waves, swirls, or eddies on the otherwise uniform surface water. Those disturbances are almost always caused by something underneath — a rock, a log, a ledge, a change in depth. Every one of those is worth investigating.
And if you see rising fish — rings on the surface — that changes everything. Before you even make a cast, take a few minutes to watch how the water moves. Look for the speed of the current; where it accelerates, where it slows, and where it changes direction. If fish are rising, watch for a minute before casting. Figure out what they're eating, where they're positioned relative to the seam, and make a plan. Rushing that process is how you blow a hatch.
How Temperature Moves the Fish
Water temperature is something that gets overlooked a lot, but it can completly change where trout are holding on any given day. Trout are cold-blooded — their bodies run at whatever temperature the water is. In high temperatures, typically above 65°F for trout, metabolic rates soar. This demands high oxygen and massive caloric intake, pushing fish into aerated riffles and the heads of runs.
On the flip side, when water temperatures are cold — think early spring or late fall — trout will slow way down and drop into the deepest, slowest water they can find. They're conserving energy because their metabolism has slowed. That means big pools and the deepest buckets in the run. Don't expect them to move far for a meal.
A simple stream thermometer costs next to nothing and it tells you more about where the fish are than most gadgets ten times the price. If the water's above 65°F, fish the aerated water. If it's below 50°F, go deep and slow. Between those two extremes, trout will be in their most active feeding zones — the seams, the heads of pools, the edges of riffles.
Slow Down Before You Cast
